Why I got involved in the Anti-227 Campaign:

Because I disagree completely with the aims of the initiative perversely nicknamed "English for the Children," I placed a post in the soc.culture.mexican.american USEnet newgroup asking that all interested people should visit their Web site and inform themselves of the pernicious nature of this latest attack on people who insist on keeping their culture alive. Its number is <33C52227.41C6@ucla.edu> and can be found at DejaNews. This caused one of their "volunteers" to e-mail me berating me for critizicing their campaign. I responded that if they want to debate the matter, to do so in the newsgroup. After telling them to go away and threatening to make their e-mail addresses public, the sponsors of the initiative, Gloria Matta Tuchman an Ron K. Unz, wrote me. Because they published Tuchman's note to me in their web site, as well as cc'ed it among themselves, I made my response to their notes public in the s.c.m.a. newsgroup. Strangely, the post has been lost (Deja News does not have it in its archive), but it is available here. Since then, the original "volunteer," Hal Edmund Netkins, has seen fit to post in s.c.m.a. In my biased opinion, he has contributed much heat and very little light to the debate. His posts can be found in DejaNews. he has not come back to s.c.m.a. for quite some time. Perhaps his other "volunteer" activities are abosrbing his time.

I have written two articles where I elaborate on my views of this initiative. One was submitted to the UCLA Daily Bruin for their Registration issue but they elected to print instead the contribution of Glenn Spencer, of Voice of Citizens Together. The other has been circulated to friends, as well as posted in various places. It is meant to debunk the myths promoted by Unz in an article that the Daily Bruin published in 16 January 1998. It draws upon information disseminated at a conference held at UC Riverside on 28-29 January 1998 entitled "Generations at Risk: The Realities and Debates of Bilingual Education." The article has a number of links to information in the Web about Bilingual Education and its foe, the English-Only movement.

I have written many posts to soc.culture.mexican.american that contain information that is interesting. Since the information may be of service to some. I am now making my posts available here. To make it easy to access my other comments, they are also included in the list:

Additions to the list will be made as time permits. Also, I now maintain:
