      The Physics and Astronomy Department is co-sponsoring the
      course described below, which will address not only policy
      issues concerning nuclear weapons, but also to a limited
      extent some of the technical issues of nuclear weapons and
      defense against them which could be of interest to phyics
      students.  Physics and astronomy students can take the course
      as a 199 course, with Professor Cornwall administratively in
      charge of the physics students' enrollment.  Professors Byers
      and Cornwall will give guest lectures in this course.

NUCLEAR WEAPONS: THE CRITICAL DECISIONS - Spring 2002
Offered as Policy Studies M116, Honors Collegium M119, Political

This upper division interdisciplinary course is being offered again
in the Spring 2002 Quarter. It will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from
12:30 to 1:45 in Knudsen 1240B. It is sponsored by the Burkle Center
for International Relations. Enrollment is limited to students with
senior standing in one of the five sponsoring departments.

Teaching Assistant: Ian Wiinikka 

The course will focus on ten critical decisions regarding nuclear
weapons, with students challenged to understand and to appraise these
decisions. The course will include several guest lectures with
experts from various departments at UCLA. The topics listed in each
section below involve background to the decision and its
consequences. They will be a guide to the readings and to the
preparation of papers.

Requirements for the course will be both a paper and a final exam,
each counting equally toward the final grade. The paper will be on
one of the topics listed below, involving a more in-depth analysis of
the decisions that were being made. It could be done individually or,
preferably, by a group of three or four students working as a team.
An outline of the paper is due on Tuesday, May 21, and the final
paper is due on Tuesday, June 4. The final exam will be a regularly
scheduled one covering the entire course, to be held Friday, June 14
from 3 to 6 pm.
