1) What is Webmail ? Webmail is a web interface to email. You can read and send your email via web from anywhere in the world. It has a all the functionality you would want from an email client, including strong support for attachments, address books, and folders for organizing your email. 2) Why use webmail instead of a regular email client ? It is doubtful that webmail will ever be a complete substitute for a regular email client. But hey, who knows? Anyway, if you ever were at a friends house, on a trip, at home or work and away from your computer and wanted to check your mail you already know why. Because it is a huge hassle to set your mail up on their computer and then delete it again, you may also need install ssh, or worry about the firewall. Webmail is designed to be a supplement to your normail email client. It also allows you move your messages to different folders. Those folders are saved on the dept's server so you can access those out-dated messages anytime from anywhere. 3) How do I login ? Here are the things you need to log into our webmail: o A web browser with a connection to the Internet o The web addresses: Physics - https://webmail.physics.ucla.edu/webmail Astronomy - https://webmail.astro.ucla.edu/webmail o Your Username and password (same as the one for Unix login, Eudora or other email client you currently use) When you get to the web page, enter your username and password, then press the `Login' button. 4) How do I use webmail ? Webmail has a very friendly and intuitive user interface. In addition, you can select "Help" at the top of the scree to find more detailed information about the webmail. 5) How do I logout out ? You can click at the "Sign Out" at upper-right corner of the screen. 6) Does webmail provide a secure connection to access the Dept's webmail ? Yes, by using `https' you can protect your username and password. The URLs are: Physics - "https://webmail.physics.ucla.edu/webmail" Astronomy - "https://webmail.astro.ucla.edu/webmail" 7) Where are my mail folders ? All folders created by webmail are located at `mail' directory under your home directory of dept's Unix server. If you have any question about the mail directory, the disk quota, or merge you old mail folders, please contact Unix systemadmin. 8) Why did I get an error tried to login to webmail using MS Explorer ? Please check your browser settings and make sure it can accept cookies from the server you are tyring to access. 9) Why was it hanging after I clicked the login button ? Most likely, you have another mail program in use. Please close those mail program, such as `pine', `Eudora', or Mailtool. You can use only one mail program (Webmail is one of them) at one time.
