The Doppler-Ionosonde
will sound or resonate the ionospheric layer and record delay
times of the returned signal. The collected data is averaged and plotted
showing graphically the density and behavior of the ionosphere. This layer
is known to have seasonal stability but is extremely sensitive to atmospheric
changes. There is much interest in the radio communications world as to
what conditions cause the layer to form.
This phase-sensitive ionosonde will also record signals bounced back from
Noctilucent Clouds which are present only during the Arctic summer .
