When a lithium niobatecrystal is heated by 10's of degrees it accelerates electrons to energies in excewss of 30keV (see figure above). when the electrons strike a zinc sulfide target they create the pattern observed in the movie (click on "See Movie" above) click here to SEE MOVIE

 Although the bubble is illuminated with a floodlight that is shining directly into the camera the flash of light – sonoluminescence is easily seen as the bubble reaches its minimum radius.

Sound to light


DROP TUBE
In this apparatus designed and built by Brian Kappus and Avik Chakravarty a modest .2 atmosphere shock wave yields a flash of sonoluminescence with an average power of 150 Watts. The energy in a flash is over 100 million times great than that in Sound to Light image above

Neutron Detector

Neutron detector designed and built by Bob Cousins and Brian Naranjo; capable of time correlated single neutron counting with a quantum efficiency that can be as high as 25%. Used for the invention of crystal fusion and the search for sonofusion.
ION TRAP

Ion trap built by Emil Kirilov to probe limits of quantum entanglement, photo shows light from a single trapped Strontium ion.

Sonoluminescence generated by a medical device used for Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction
