Inferior conjuction would put a planet between the earth and the sun in its orbit.
Superior conjuction would put the sun between two planets.
Only venus and mercury can have inferior conjuction, with relation to earth, because their orbits are smaller than the earth's, and can therefore orbit between the earth and the sun. Mars and the outer planets can only have superior conjunction, with respect to the earth.
