: 1. How does the position and intensirt of specreal lines in a star's spectrum indicate what elements and how much of each element is in the actual star?
: 2. What can cause spectral lines to be broadened?
1. Each element has a specific pattern of spectral lines which can be used to identify the element. The intensity of the line (or its density on film) can be used to determine the percentage of the element in the star, but physics knowledge of the intensity of lines as a function of temperature must also be used.
2. See the handout on spectral information.
