Recent Changes to JFC
This section contains a short overview of changes in the most recent versions of JWPce. For a full list of changes see the JFC-CHANGES.TXT file.
- Version 1.30 PocketPC version and maintenance updates.
Improved Random Numbers: The random number generator is now based on a 32-bit algarithum and provides for up to 22 million cards. The seed has been improved.
JWPce Compatability: JFC and JWPce are again using the same encoding for color-kanji.
Character Information: JFC now uses the same configurable character information as JWPce. Further, JFC also supports the same kind of adjustable size dialog box for the character information. Six new types of information were added to the character information.
- "A Guide To Reading and Writing Japanese" edited by Florence Sakade.
- the Tuttle Kanji Cards, compiled by Alexander Kask.
- "The Kanji Way to Japanese Language Power" by Dale Crowley.
- "Kanji in Context" by Nishiguchi and Kono.
- "Japanese For Busy People" vols I-III, published by the AJLT.
- "Kodansha Compact Kanji Guide".
Display Issues: Fixed several small display bugs, as well as full support for use color schemes. Added control to temporarily change the font size allowing more information to be displayed at one time. Note this control can be used backwards to temporarily increase the font size allowing a clearer view of the text. On Windows CE devices this control has a button. On Windows 95 systems, this control can be accessed from the Cards menu or using Ctrl+F. Fixed bug in formatting of Japanese text boxes.
Bug Fixes: Several small bugs were fixed in the code. These include many display issues and real buts.
True PocketPC Version: There is now a true PocketPC version, as opposed to using the PPC version. Several changes had to be made in the system to support limitations of the PocketPC OS. These include:
- Removed dynamic help is not supported on PocketPC (since the OS does support this).
- Dynamic sizing of dialogs is not supported.
- Several dialogs had to be converted to full screen. These dialogs can no longer be cancelled since the cancel button cannot be placed in the title bar.
- SIP handling is now PocketPC standard, which is less intuitive, but it is standard.
- Menu and tool bar moved to the bottom as is standard.
- The X control in the corner of the main window does not exit the program. This simply hides the program as is the PocketPC standard. You can use the Exit command in the File menu to exit the program, which is not a PocketPC standar.
PocketPC and PPC Changes: The 3D-look never worked right with the PPC or PocketPC OS. This has been replaced with a flat and efficient look. Long file names are automatically truncated and the beginning of the name is replaced with "...". Changed control layout for PocketPC and PPC systems:

- Version 1.20 Major update of the program. In order to support many of the new options, the configuration file had to be changed.
Save Your Position: JFC will offer to save the position in cards sets and will automatically recover it's position. Note the save files are deleted after a recovery. This keeps the system clean. There is only one save per file. The saves are stored in files with the .jsv extension.
Font Handling: Major changes in font handling. JFC now supports up too five (5) different fonts. Separate fonts can be used for kanji, kana, meaning, system text (used only in Character Information dialog), and big kanji (also used only in Character Information).
Including Files (Subfiles): JFC allows flash card files to include other flash card files. These lines are marked by a &
. The name of the file can be an absolute path or a relative path from the location of the first file. Character Information: Kanji information is now available in JFC (the same as in JWPce). This can be obtained by right clicking on a character, double clicking a character, or by holding alt and left clicking a character.
International Support: JFC supports localization (translation of the interface into another language) via use of the JFC_LANG.DLL file. Translation kits are available for download for people wishing to translate JFC into another language. UNICODE support for dialog boxes and file names is now included on CE devices (very important on Japanese CE devices).
General Fixes: File icon works. Windows CE small icons work. Changes in the window size are handled better. A number of spelling mistakes have been fixed. Many changes to the Options dialog. Fixed help button in the Options dialog. Updates in the statistics file. Small icons are now provided. Keyboard shortcuts removed from PPC version. The active line is remembered when the program is activated and deactivated.
Major Bug Fixes: Spaces are now supported in the meaning field of kanji cards, as well as in the reading fields. JFC now correctly installs itself on CE systems, including Japanese systems. A error in previous versions of JFC prevented the review mode settings from being saved with statistics file configurations. This has been fixed. When saving new stat files, the review mode settings will be included. When loading old files, the current review mode settings will be used. All files will be written in the new mode.
Enhancements: Semi-automatic kanji cards are now supported (you provide the kanji and the meaning, JFC provides the readings). These can very helpful for non-English users. Added ';' for right and ':' for wrong (this works better on some European keyboards). Action taken by double click is now user configurable. Added many additional keyboard commands and control modes. How much information is displayed in the title bar can be adjusted. Disabled the key repeats for. This makes using the keyboard easier.
Windows CE: Install is now correct on Windows CE. The initialization correctly reads the system folders from the registry and no loger uses defaults. Support for PPC controls has been expanded. This includes support for the wheel control, and cursor controls like on the Casio and iPaq. PPC version has a display style closer to the PocketPC interface.
Card Processing Changes: The moving of missed cards to the end of the stack can be disabled. Time limits can be placed on the cards. You can limit the number of cards generated by a single file. Auto-expand and auto-collapse options are now included for the advanced kanji cards.
- Version 1.12 Some more revisions and changes to keep the program up with JWPce.
Improvements to the interface: New keyboard controls were added. A right-hand set (<,-Show, >.-Right, and ?/-Wrong) and a left-handed set (Zz-Show, Xx-Right, and Cc-Wrong). Examination of the keyboard will show that these can be more convenient for people using the keyboard. Added control to allow the program to exit quietly. Revised the description of the review-mode settings, they mean the same thing but are much easier to understand.
Fonts: TrueType fonts can now be used in Windows CE devices with TrueType font support. Added control to allow selection of any font.
Compatability Issues: Program was updated to use the newest version of kanjinfo.dat file. The newest version of EDICT is now included with the maximum distribution.
Windows CE: Changes the allocation sizes for display windows on Windows CE machines. This will allow display of partial display window at the button if at least one full line can be displayed. This should suppress the problem of the last line not displaying correctly. See fonts above.
- Version 1.10 Some revisions after first usages.
Enhancements and Addtions: Flags can now be combined. Kk for example will generate a kana card and a Kanji card. JFC better handles the case where the settings are messed up and no flash cards are generated. A option was added to consider all kanji known for those of you who really know your kanji.
Bug Fixes: Fixed bug that prevented loading of JFC files by clicking on them. The icons are correctly associated with the data files. JFC does not destroy the window when being minimized. A bug that caused a crash when changing some options settings while no cards were loaded has been fixed.
Character Handling Changes: Fixed processing of ASCII character 255 for Russian users. The kanji # character now functions as a comment marker in UTF-8 flash card files. JFC now adjust the UNICODE processing to the local code page used by the system. This will cause UNICODE translations of Russan, Greek, etc to be valid in all systems. If JFC cannot identify your code page (or you have and east-asian code page) the USA/Western Europe code page will be used.
A previous mistake in UNICODE data processing caused JWPce to incorrectly process UNICODE data (including UTF-7 and UTF-8) that had characters in the extended ascii space of the code page. This affects special characters such as umlauts and accented characters. Before installing this version of JWPce convert any such files to JWPce/JWP file format, so the characters will not be garbled. -- Sorry for the inconvenience.
