I read this book because of a
review on rec.arts.sf.written by Andrew
Plotkin, which intrigued me.
I don't have much to say about the book which he didn't say,
or that Chad says in
his review. It's good, goofy fun.
A couple random comments:
- One of the best-depicted breakup scenes ever: Before Gaby dumps Harris, he
thinks, "What the hell. His life wasn't over. He had a great girlfriend and
a pair of well-tied shoes." After she leaves him at a Chinese restaurant,
he thinks, "What the hell. His life wasn't over. He had a great bowl of
wonton soup and a pair of well-tied shoes."
- Omigod, Harris' girlfriend Gaby (who dumps him at the beginning of the
novel) is a bee-aaatch. She SO does not deserve him. When she pulled her
little manipulative stunt at the end to "test" whether or not he was
man enough to be her boyfriend, he should have just said, "Sorry, babe."
He should get together with Noriko, or some other hot elf babe.
