Rainer Wallny joined the UCLA Physics and Astronomy faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2003. He received a M.S.degree from the University of Washington in 1994 as visiting graduate student of the University of Tübingen, Germany. After his return to Germany, he received a German Diplom Degree from the University of Heidelberg in 1996 and his PhD degree from the University of Zürich, Switzerland in 2001.
In his thesis he determined the strong coupling constant and the gluon distribution in the proton from inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data taken by the H1 detector at the HERA electron proton collider at DESY Hamburg, Germany. This first determination of &alpha s from inclusive DIS lepton proton scattering data alone was performed in close collaboration with researchers at DESY Zeuthen, Germany, and LAL Orsay, France.
In 2001-2003, he performed post graduate work at CERN developing the ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker Endcap Modules. Subsequently, he joined the CDF Collaboration at Fermilab where he lead the CDF Silicon Operations Group from 2003-2004. His recent research interests have been devoted to studying the properties of the top quark.
